If you live in Alberta or are flying into the Rockies, you know the YYC airport is more than just a pit stop. It’s the gateway to the West, the oil and gas hub, and the launching point for Banff National Park.
Some days, it’s easy, you clear security in ten minutes and grab a beer at the gate. Other days, the parking lots are full, and the security line snakes past the food court.
Let’s skip the fluff. Here is exactly how to tackle Calgary International Airport like a pro this year.
Before we get into the details, here is the essential information for your trip.
| Feature | Detail |
| Airport Code | YYC |
| Location | 2000 Airport Rd NE, Calgary (about 15-20 min from downtown) |
| Terminals | One main terminal building (Domestic, US, International) |
| Wi-Fi | Free unlimited Wi-Fi (Connect to “YYC-Free-WiFi”) |
| Car Rental | Located in the Parkade (walk across the covered walkway) |
| Rideshare/Taxis | Level 1 (Arrivals) outside Door 3, 7, 10, or 14 |
YYC Airport has a single terminal building shaped like a “T”. It is divided into three main departure sections. Once through security, you can walk between sections, but it takes 15 to 20 minutes to walk from one end to the other.
The terminal is where flights within Canada depart. WestJet uses concourses A and B heavily. Air Canada and other Canadian carriers also operate here. Most gates are a short walk from security.
All flights to the United States leave from here. You clear US Customs before boarding. Once you enter this section, you cannot easily go back to the domestic side without exiting security.
Flights to Europe, Asia, Mexico, the Caribbean, and other international destinations depart here. Duty-free shopping is available. Showers and lounges are also in this section.
YYC offers several parking choices. Prices change based on demand, so booking online ahead of time saves money.
| Parking Options at YYC | Best For | Walk to Terminal |
| Parkade | Short trips, business travellers | Direct connection (covered walkway) |
| Economy Lot (Park and Jet) | Budget travellers, week-long trips | Free shuttle bus (every 10–15 minutes) |
| Cell Phone Lot | Waiting to pick up passengers | N/A (free waiting area) |
| Valet Parking | Luxury or rushed travellers | Drop off at departures door |
YYC uses the newer automated CATSA Plus lines. Bins return automatically. It is faster than older systems, but travellers still make the same mistakes.
If you have NEXUS, use the dedicated lane. It easily saves you 10-20 minutes. NEXUS also works for US Customs pre-clearance.
Laptops come out of bags. Liquids must be 100ml or less and in a clear 1L bag. Jackets and belts come off. Boots often need to be removed.
You clear US customs at YYC before you board. Arrive at least 2 hours early. The customs hall closes for flights exactly 60 minutes before departure. If you arrive 50 minutes late, you miss your flight.
Arriving passengers will use the Primary Inspection Hall. Automated border kiosks (ABCs) are available. Answer the questions, scan your passport, take the receipt, and hand it to the border officer. Then proceed to baggage claim on Level 2.
Baggage claim is on Level 2. Carousels 1-4 serve domestic flights. Wait times are usually 15 to 25 minutes.
Carousels 5 to 10 serve both US and international flights. Customs clearance happens before baggage claim. Wait times can reach 40 minutes during busy periods.
Go to the baggage service desk for your airline. It is located near the carousels on Level 2. File a report immediately. Do not leave the airport without a report number.
YYC does not have a dedicated left luggage or baggage storage facility. You cannot store bags at the airport. Plan accordingly if you have a long layover.
Free unlimited Wi-Fi is available throughout the terminal. Connect to the network named “YYC-Free-WiFi.” No password required. Connection speed is excellent for browsing, emails, and streaming.
Charging stations are located at every gate area. Look for the tall silver poles with outlets and USB ports. Some seating areas also have built-in plugs. Bring your own charging brick. Outlets are standard Canadian three-prong (Type A/B).
Quiet work desks with power outlets are available near gates B10 and E8. These are best for business travellers who need a proper workspace.
YYC has improved its food options significantly in the last few years. You no longer have to put up with stale sandwiches.
Insider Tip: Food prices are higher after security. If you want a cheap meal, eat at the food court before security near the domestic check-in area.
YYC has several lounges. Access depends on your ticket class, lounge membership, or credit card.
| Lounge Name | Location | Access |
| WestJet Elevation Lounge | Concourse B (near gate B40) | Business class, WestJet Rewards Gold/Platinum |
| Aspire Lounge | Concourse E (International) | Priority Pass, LoungeKey, pay-per-use ($50 CAD) |
| Plaza Premium Lounge | Concourse D (US departures) | Plaza Premium, American Express Platinum |
| Air Canada Maple Leaf Lounge | Concourse A (near gate A6) | Business class, Aeroplan 50K+, Star Alliance Gold |
Taxi stands are outside arrivals on Level 1. Flat rate to downtown is approximately 45–55 CAD. Metered fares vary. Rideshare (Uber, Lyft) Pickup zones are clearly marked outside doors 3, 7, 10, and 14. Follow the app instructions. Do not try to meet your driver at departures. They cannot pick you up there.
Route 300 to downtown. Route 100 goes to Marlborough LRT Station, which connects to the C-Train. Fare is $3.65 CAD. Exact change or credit card tap is accepted.
The Parkade hosts all major rental companies. Walk from arrivals through the covered walkway. Companies include Avis, Budget, Enterprise, Hertz, National, and Sixt.
Many nearby hotels offer free shuttles. Pickup is on Level 1 outside Door 5. Look for your hotel’s sign.
YYC is fully accessible for travellers with disabilities or reduced mobility.

Request assistance from your airline when you book your ticket. Staff can help from check-in through security and to your gate.

Calgary International Airport is straightforward once you know the layout. The one-terminal design keeps things simple. But the long walks, strict US customs cutoff, and winter weather catch first-time visitors off guard.
Plan for 20 minutes of walking. Give yourself 90 minutes for domestic flights. Book economy parking online. And always pack a sweater; Calgary weather does not follow the calendar.
Do those things, and YYC treats you just fine.
