There are some festivals you can celebrate over a video call.
And then there are festivals where you really want to be there in person.
For many Indians living in Canada, Raksha Bandhan is one of them. You can send a Rakhi, arrange a family video call, order sweets, and still make the day special. But nothing quite replaces sitting beside your brother or sister, doing the ceremony together, sharing mithai, and staying at the family table long after the Rakhi has been tied.
The biggest point of confusion for NRIs is that the festival date is not the same around the world. The Hindu festival date is determined by the “tithi” (lunar day), which changes based on your time zone.
Since the Purnima Tithi begins on the 27th in India and ends on the 28th, it falls a day earlier for North American time zones.
For families celebrating in Canada, the auspicious window to tie the rakhi is on Thursday, August 27, 2026. Here are the timings for major cities:
| City | Raksha Bandhan 2026 Date | Rakhi Thread Ceremony Time | Bhadra Kaal Ends |
| Toronto | Thursday, August 27, 2026 | 11:58 AM – 10:09 PM | 11:58 AM |
| Montreal | Thursday, August 27, 2026 | 11:58 AM – 9:47 PM | 11:58 AM |
| Ottawa | August 27 | 11:58 AM – 9:55 PM | 11:58 AM |
| Vancouver | Thursday, August 27, 2026 | 8:58 AM – 9:18 PM | 8:58 AM |
Toronto’s calculated Aparahna Rakhi Muhurat is 2:39 PM to 5:21 PM, while Vancouver’s is 2:35 PM to 5:20 PM.
*Festival timings can vary by location and Panchang calculation. If the exact ceremony time matters to your family, verify it against a reliable local Panchang or temple.
The festival is based on the Purnima Tithi and must be observed after Bhadra Kaal (an inauspicious period) has ended. In India, Bhadra ends before sunrise on August 28, making that whole morning auspicious.
In Toronto, for example, the tithi calculations mean the auspicious window opens on the afternoon of August 27. Most NRI families handle this by tying the rakhi on the evening of August 27 to align with India’s August 28 daytime celebration.

A Canada-to-India flight doesn’t cover every city. However, you can book your tickets to a major international gateway such as Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, or Ahmedabad, and then look at the onward journey separately.
Once you land, domestic airlines like IndiGo, Air India, Vistara, and SpiceJet connect to cities like Amritsar, Chandigarh, Lucknow, Jaipur, Kochi, and many others.
Leave a buffer of 4-5 hours between your international arrival and domestic departure. International flights can face delays, and you’ll need time for immigration and baggage collection.
