Flying To Canada After February 22, 2021

Minimizing The Risk Of Exposure to COVID-19 In Canada Order was issued on February 14, 2021, by the Government of Canada. An updated version of the Quarantine Order came into effect on February 22, 2021, 12:00 AM EST. According to the new travel news, passengers will need to fulfill the following entry requirements in addition to providing a negative pre-departure COVID-19 test taken 72 hours prior to arrival.

  • Everyone arriving in Canada will be required to take two COVID-19 molecular tests: one on arrival at the airport and the other towards the end of the mandatory quarantine period via an at-home test kit.
  • Before traveling, passengers must book and pay for a three-night stay at a government-authorized accommodation and present proof of the booking on arrival.
  • Passengers taking any connecting flights within Canada will need to claim their baggage and complete the test and mandatory stay at the first point of entry.
  • After receiving a negative test result, passengers can take the connecting flight and complete the remaining quarantine at their final destination.
  • Passengers testing positive on the first test will be moved to a federal designated quarantine facility for the remainder of their 14-day quarantine.

Pre-departure Preparation For Your Flight To Canada

Before you can board your flight to Canada, you need to:

  • Get a negative COVID-19 test result at least 72 hours before departure.
  • Book a room at the government-authorized accommodation for three nights.
  • Download the ArriveCAN mobile app to provide contact details and get information about the quarantine plan.
  • Rebook any connecting flights to complete the three-day quarantine requirement at the first point of entry.

COVID Test Requirements After Your Flights To Canada

Before you can travel to Canada, you will be required to pay for a three-night stay at a government-designated accommodation. The list of government-authorized accommodations is available on the Government of Canada website. People who are taking flights to Canada will need to take two COVID-19 molecular tests:

  • On entering Canada: The first test will be done as soon as you enter Canada.
  • After entering Canada: The second test will be done using an at-home kit towards the end of your 14-day quarantine period in Canada.

Taking Connecting Flights Within Canada

Passengers who will be taking a connecting flight and traveling to another city within Canada would need to take the first COVID-19 molecular test at the first point of entry. They would then proceed to quarantine for three days at a government-authorized accommodation. They will be allowed to board the connecting flight only after getting a negative result and proceed on to their final destination. The second COVID-19 molecular test will be done towards the end of their quarantine, which they will complete at their final destination.

Taking Connecting Flights To An International Destination

Passengers passing through Canada and taking a connecting flight to another international destination are exempt from taking any COVID-19 tests or quarantine as long as they remain in the secure terminal area. They will need to abide by the rules set by the country of their final destination.

What Happens Once Your Flight To Canada Lands

Once you have entered Canada, you need to:

  • Do the COVID-19 molecular test at the airport.
  • Proceed to the government-authorized accommodation you book. The journey from the airport to the accommodation should be arranged by the passengers. They are not allowed to use the public transport system.
  • After receiving a negative test result, passengers can then proceed to the mandatory 14-day quarantine or take a connecting flight to their final destination within Canada or abroad.

Mandatory Hotel Quarantine Requirements When Booking Flights To Canada

People book International flights and entering Canada must quarantine themselves for 14 days after receiving a negative COVID-19 test. Towards the end of the 14-day quarantine, they would need to do another COVID-19 molecular test. In order to leave the quarantine facility, you would need the following:

  • A negative COVID-19 molecular test result.
  • If you do not get a negative result before your quarantine ends, you would need to follow the directions of the screening officer until the negative test results arrive.

What Happens If I Get A Positive COVID-19 Test Result

Any passenger who develops any symptoms or receives a positive test result after the first or second test will then be taken to the federal quarantine facility. The person will then have to remain in the facility until they recover and their COVID-19 test is negative.

Exemptions To The Quarantine Rule

There are certain limited exemptions to the mandatory 14-day hotel quarantine rule. The people exempted from this are:

  • An unaccompanied minor or an unaccompanied dependant child.
  • A counselor or diplomatic courier.
  • A person with pressing or special circumstances can be exempted from the quarantine. However, they would need to follow the instructions of the quarantine officer.

Although the rules about providing proof of the prepaid quarantine accommodation fall under a gray area, passengers are advised to get the same to avoid any problems when they reach Canada.
