WestJet Check In Policy

Posted on May 20th, 2022 by Heena Ganotra, Last updated on Oct 17th, 2022

If you’ve boarded a flight before, the WestJet check-in process will be familiar to you. The airline follows industry practices for the most part and offers a direct, kiosk, and online check-in options for its passengers. We will explain the entire check-in process and WestJet’s particular requirements in this post so you know just what to do before boarding.

WestJet Web Check-In

Travelers can check in to a WestJet flight online instead of arriving early at the airport. The web check-in process is pretty straightforward. You just need to visit the check-in portal on the airline’s website and enter the required details. Here’s what you need to do for WestJet official site check-in:

  • You will need to find your trip first. You can do it by entering your ticket or reservation number.
  • Once you choose the option, enter your last name and the 13-digit ticket number or the 5 to 6-character reservation code.
  • You can find the WestJet web check-in reservation code on the vacation itinerary of your e-ticket.
  • The tool will find your trip and you can proceed with the WestJet web check-in process.
  • Keep your passport, hotel name, a destination address, cruise, and/or transit airline details in handy if you’re traveling to the United States.
  • Keep your passport with you to check in for international trips.
  • If you’re entering Canada on a WestJet flight, you need to submit ArriveCAN before 72 hours of your arrival.

You will need to carry your vaccination certificate to prove that you have had a full dose of one of the covid-19 vaccines available before you enter Canada. If you’re flying out of Canada, consider the rules and regulations of your destination country before checking in.

WestJet Mobile Check In App

WestJet does have a dedicated app to help flyers with their check-in process. You can manage your trips on the app and keep a record of multiple trips in one place. The app is available for both Android and iOS platforms.

WestJet check-in app is available for all departures in Canada and US but may not be available for some international destinations. If your app check-in isn’t available for your destination, you can open the WestJet website on your mobile phone browser and check in from there.

You can manage your trips online through the website or the app. This includes check-ins, changing or canceling flights, selecting seats, managing reward points, and reviewing your trip itinerary. All of the information related to your flight will be available to you during WestJet online check-in.

WestJet Flight Check-In At the Airport

You don’t need to check in online or use the app. Airport check-in is still available and easy to use. There are two ways to check in at the airport and they are described below:

  • Airport Kiosks – Many airports have WestJet kiosks that offer WestJet 24-hour check-in. Up can use these machines to check in for your flights up to 24 hours before the scheduled departure. All you need to do is arrive at the airport a little early to have enough time to use the kiosks. The kiosks are versatile, effective, and reliable. If you have any issues with them, you can contact the nearest WestJet agent for some assistance.
  • Direct CheckIn – Many domestic and international airports don’t have WestJet kiosks, which means you need to check in directly at the counter. This is also very easy as you just need to present your ticket and get the boarding pass. This is available at every airport, regardless of your destination. That means if you can’t access the WestJet check-in website or the service isn’t available on the app, you can rely on the airport check-in counter.

The WestJet website provides information about destination airports and service availability. We recommend checking the portal to find all relevant information for your trip. Being informed about the check-in details will ensure you have a smoother and easier journey.

WestJet Recommended Check-In Times

WestJet recommends travelers arrive at the airport at certain times to go through the check-in and security screening process quickly. Here are some of the WestJet check-in rules to keep in mind:

  • Check-in opens 24 hours before the scheduled flight online, on the app, and the kiosks. You can check-in at any time between 24 hours and 45-60 minutes before departure depending on the route.
  • Airport check-in starts 3 hours before departure and will close 45-60 minutes before departure depending on the route. The helpful WestJet agents at the counter will process your check-in quickly.
  • The check in-time for WestJet domestic flights begins 24 hours before the scheduled trip online, on the app, and the kiosks. It begins 3 hours before the trip at the airport. Check-in will close 45 minutes before departure so make sure the process is complete by then. Boarding will stop 10 minutes before the flight is set to depart.
  • The check-in time for US flights begins 24 hours before the scheduled trip online, on app, and the kiosks. It begins 3 hours before the trip at the airport. Check-in will close 60 minutes before departure and boarding will close 10 minutes before the flight is set to depart.
  • The WestJet check-in times for international flights begin 24 hours before the scheduled trip online, on app, and the kiosks. It begins 3 hours before the trip at the airport. Check-in will close 60 minutes before departure and boarding will close 10 minutes before the flight is set to depart.

Please note that the gate closing time is for all flights but Boeing 787. If you’re traveling by Boeing 787, the gate will close 15 minutes before departure time.

WestJet recommends the timings mentioned below:

  • Arriving at the airport – Domestic passengers should arrive at least 2 hours or 120 minutes before departure. US and International travelers should arrive 2.5 hours or 150 minutes before departure.
  • WestJet baggage check-in time – The airline recommends dropping off your baggage around 90 minutes before the scheduled flight for both domestic and international travelers. The baggage drop cut-off time is 45 minutes before the flight for domestic and 60 minutes before the flight for international travelers.
  • Boarding gate arrival time – WestJet recommends arriving at the boarding gate at least 40 minutes before departure time.

If you follow the recommended schedule, the process will be smoother. However, WestJet does recommend checking the security wait times if your flight departs from Toronto, Vancouver, or Calgary airports. Be sure you account for these wait times in your plans and arrive at your boarding gate accordingly.

WestJet Check-in Requirements

There are some additional requirements to consider depending on the nature of your trip and who accompanies you. We recommend visiting the WestJet website to see if any rules apply to your specific travel circumstances. Some of the rules include:

  • If you have purchased an extra seat or at traveling with more than nine people with the same last name, check in with the WestJet agent at the airport instead of online or through the kiosks.
  • If you’re traveling with a pet, allow for an additional 30 mins from your time. If you’re check-in your pet in, you may need to arrive anywhere between 60-120 minutes before departure.
  • People traveling with oversized or overweight bags need to arrive at least 30 minutes early.
  • If you’re an unaccompanied minor, you need to check in with the WestJet agent at least 90 minutes before the flight is scheduled to depart.

If any of these circumstances apply to you, plan your schedule to accommodate the different time requirements. WestJet check-in times are subject to change based on changing circumstances. The information provided at accurate as of May 2022 but we recommend check-in the website before your trip to ensure nothing has changed.

WestJet Check-In Online Boarding Pass

You can download and save the WestJet online check-in boarding pass on your mobile device just to ensure you have access to your e-boarding pass if there is no Wi-Fi available. We recommend printing it out if you’re traveling to an international destination because not all destination airports will accept an e-boarding pass on your device.

If you don’t have the ePass downloaded, you may need to check in again at the airport. The e-Boarding passes can’t be forwarded but you can request another pass at a different email address.

Print versions are easily available at the airport. You can print the pass at the kiosk or the WestJet check-in counter.

WestJet Check-In Baggage Restrictions

Before you check-in or even leave your house, make sure your luggage meets the WestJet check-in baggage restrictions. Here’s a look at the requirements:

  • Passengers are allowed to check in 2-4 bags (2-3 bags on WestJet Encore and only 2 bags for destinations like Jamaica, Cuba, Trinidad and Tobago.)
  • If you have additional bags, ship them through WestJet Cargo.
  • The WestJet check-in baggage fee can range between $30 and $118 based on your trip, the number of bags, and other such factors.
  • Your checked bags shouldn’t be more than 157cm in total and shouldn’t weigh more than 23kgs. If you’re heading for Europe, your luggage weight can exceed 23kgs but shouldn’t be more than 32kgs.
  • Passengers can take one free carry-on luggage and one personal item. For example, you can take a small bag and a laptop case with you. The carry-on bag size shouldn’t exceed 53 cm x 23 cm x 38 cm and the personal item size shouldn’t exceed 41 cm x 15 cm x 33 cm. The small luggage bag should be light enough that a healthy adult can place it in the overhead cabin without assistance.

Make sure all of your bags are under the required limit to ensure there are no additional fees to pay at the last minute.

This is all you need to know about the WestJet check-in process. If you follow the recommended timings and allow leave for security checks and baggage check-in, you won’t be late or miss the flight.
