Best Things to Do in Vancouver

Vancouver’s biggest attractions cover very different experiences, from forests and beaches to museums, markets and historic neighbourhoods. Start with the best places to visit in Vancouver that interest you most, then plan the rest of your day around them.

  • Stanley Park

Stanley Park is one of the city’s best-known attractions and an easy starting point for first-time visitors. Walk or cycle along the Seawall, explore its forest trails, see the totem poles or stop at one of the beaches.

You can easily spend several hours here, especially if you are keen to explore beyond the main viewpoints.

  • Vancouver’s Waterfront

The waterfront is where some of Vancouver’s best city and mountain views come together. Walk along the Seawall, spend time around Canada Place or continue towards Coal Harbour and Stanley Park.

If you want to see the city from a different perspective, you can also take harbour cruises and other sightseeing tours.

  • Granville Island

For a change of pace, head to Granville Island. The Public Market, independent shops, galleries and waterfront setting make it one of the most popular places to visit in Vancouver.

It is a good place to browse, eat and pick up gifts without needing to plan every minute of your visit.

  • Explore Gastown

Gastown brings Vancouver’s history and modern city life together. Walk through its historic streets, stop at a café, browse independent shops or continue towards the waterfront.

Because it sits close to downtown, Gastown is easy to combine with other Vancouver attractions during the same outing.

  • English Bay

When you want to slow down, English Bay is an easy choice. It is one of the best Vancouver tourist spots that locals also use daily. Its beach, waterfront path and views make it a popular stop, particularly later in the day.

You can combine it with the West End, Stanley Park or a walk along the Seawall.

Vancouver Museums, Art & Culture

Vancouver’s attractions are not limited to the outdoors. The city has museums and galleries covering art, Indigenous culture, science, local history and more.

The Vancouver Art Gallery is a natural choice for art lovers. The Museum of Anthropology at UBC offers a more profound look at Indigenous art and cultures, while the Museum of Vancouver explores the city’s history.

For interactive exhibits, Science World is particularly popular with families. You can also visit the Bill Reid Gallery for Northwest Coast Indigenous art.

If you are interested in something more specific, Vancouver also has cultural attractions such as the Chinese Canadian Museum and Dr Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden.

Shopping in Vancouver

Once you’ve covered the main sights, Vancouver’s shopping areas offer a different way to explore the city.

Robson Street is a convenient choice for clothing stores, cafés and mainstream shopping, while CF Pacific Centre brings major retailers together in the downtown area.

For something less conventional, explore the independent shops around Gastown and Yaletown or browse the stores and market stalls at Granville Island.

Whether you’re looking for clothes, gifts, local products or souvenirs, you don’t have to stay inside a shopping mall to find something worth taking home.

Things to Do Around Vancouver

Have more than a couple of days? Look beyond the city centre.

North Vancouver is an easy option for mountain scenery and outdoor activities. Grouse Mountain and Capilano Suspension Bridge Park are among the better-known experiences on the North Shore.

You can also explore Richmond, Steveston and other parts of Metro Vancouver, depending on how much time you have.

For a longer stay, Vancouver can also work as a base for exploring the wider region rather than trying to fit every experience into the city itself.

Getting to Downtown Vancouver from the Airport

Vancouver International Airport (YVR) sits about 12 kilometres south of downtown. The Canada Line SkyTrain gets you from the airport to Waterfront Station in roughly 25 minutes. It runs every few minutes and costs a fraction of a taxi.

Taxis and ride-share pickups are available outside both terminals. A cab to downtown takes 20 to 30 minutes depending on traffic.

If you land in the morning, you can drop your bags and be at Stanley Park or Granville Island by lunch. In the evening, a short walk from most downtown hotels will take you to the Seawall at sunset.

Things to Do in Vancouver in Summer, Winter & December

Vancouver changes with the seasons, so the best things to do in Vancouver also change when you visit.

Summer is ideal for beaches, parks, cycling, waterfront walks and longer days outdoors.

Winter gives you more reason to explore museums, galleries, shopping areas and indoor attractions. The mountains around Vancouver also become an option for winter activities.
