Ganesh Chaturthi 2026 falls on Monday, September 14, with Ganesh Visarjan on Friday, September 25. But for devotees, Ganpati Bappa’s arrival is not just about a date on the calendar.
For many Hindu families, the festival is a time when Ganpati visits their home. The devotees offer prayers and aarti, prepare favourite foods, and spend time together before giving the idol a respectful farewell. The festival is celebrated across India, although Maharashtra is especially known for its grand public Ganeshotsav.
If you’re planning to travel from Canada to India for Ganesh Chaturthi 2026, here’s what you need to know about flights, routes, and connections.
| Occasion | Date |
| Ganesh Chaturthi | Monday, September 14, 2026 |
| Ganeshotsav | September 14 to 25, depending on tradition |
| Anant Chaturdashi | Friday, September 25, 2026 |
| Major Ganesh Visarjan | Friday, September 25 |
Ganesh Chaturthi marks the beginning of Ganeshotsav. While some families and communities perform visarjan earlier, the 10-day celebration traditionally culminates on Anant Chaturdashi, September 25.
The most auspicious time for Ganesh Sthapana (idol installation) is the Madhyahna Muhurat, a midday window centred on local solar noon.
| City | Ganesh Puja Muhurat |
| Toronto | 11:30 AM to 2:30 PM |
| Vancouver | 11:30 AM to 2:30 PM |
Muhurat can vary by location because the Panchang is calculated using local sunrise and other astronomical factors, so families following a specific tradition should verify their local Panchang.

Ganesh Chaturthi celebrates the birth of Lord Ganesha, the elephant-headed deity who is revered as the remover of obstacles and the god of new beginnings. The festival falls on the Chaturthi (fourth day) of the Shukla Paksha in the month of Bhadrapada, which typically corresponds to August or September in the Gregorian calendar.
The festival involves:
The 10-day observance is the traditional structure of Ganeshotsav, beginning with Ganesh Chaturthi and culminating on Anant Chaturdashi.
The modern public form of this extended celebration was strongly popularized in Maharashtra by anti-colonial freedom fighter Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak in the late 19th century, when public Ganesh festivals became a way of bringing communities together.
The 10-day structure follows a logical progression:
Ganesh Chaturthi → installation → days of worship → Anant Chaturdashi → Visarjan
Not every household keeps the idol for all 10 days. Visarjan may take place after 1½, 3, 5, 7, or 10/11 days depending on family and regional tradition. Families who cannot keep the idol for the full duration often choose a shorter period that fits their schedule.
According to the traditional lore, writing the Mahabharata continuously without stopping generated heat in Bappa’s body. To cool him down, Vyasa applied mud to his body. By the 10th day, the mud had dried up completely, and his temperature had risen dangerously.
To remove the dried mud and cool him, Vyasa immersed him in water. From that day, the tradition of worshipping Ganesha for 10 days began, ending with immersion, now known as Ganesh Visarjan.
Today, the visarjan also carries another meaning: it symbolizes Ganesha’s return to Mount Kailash after his stay on Earth, with devotees believing he will return next year.
Across India, Ganesh Chaturthi begins with devotees bringing home or installing a Ganesh murti, followed by puja, aarti, offerings, and community celebrations. Families may keep the idol for different durations before taking it for Ganesh Visarjan. The way the festival looks, however, changes from one region to another.
Mumbai, Pune, and other parts of Maharashtra are particularly associated with large-scale Ganeshotsav, public mandals, processions, and visarjan. In the late 19th century, Lokmanya Tilak popularized the festival as a public event to unite people during the freedom struggle. Today, Mumbai’s Lalbaugcha Raja and other famous pandals attract millions of devotees.
In Karnataka, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Goa, Gujarat, and other regions, people also celebrate Ganesh Chaturthi, with local traditions and names. In South India, the festival is known as Vinayaka Chaturthi or Vinayagar Chaturthi.
Being in Canada doesn’t mean Ganesh Chaturthi becomes a purely private celebration. Indian communities across cities such as Toronto, Vancouver, Calgary, Ottawa, and others organize temple and community programs, while many families also bring Ganpati home and continue their traditions.
| City | Event |
| Toronto | Toronto Cha Raja Festival: a vibrant community celebration featuring dhol-tasha, modak, and cultural programmes |
| Calgary | Ganesh Chaturthi Puja (September 14): Grand Ganesh Utsav Procession (September 20), the only Ganesh procession in Canada that goes through downtown |
| Calgary | Ganesh Chaturthi & Bhajan Jamming at New Indo-Canadian Centre (September 14) |
| Calgary | Ganesh Chaturthi & Bhandara (September 19), community feast and celebrations |
| Ottawa | Sri Ganesh Festival at Hindu Temple, Gloucester |
